Living in the UniverCity community
Burnaby Mountain is home to the UniverCity community with over 5,000 residents and growing. It is also the main hub of Simon Fraser University which is one of the top comprehensive universities in Canada. The UniverCity community is comprised of four distinct neighborhoods: West Highlands, East Highlands, the Slopes and High Street. West Highlands offers dramatic views of Burrard Inlet and the North Shore mountains. East Highlands is easy walking distance to SFU, transit and the many shops and services of High Street. The High Street neighborhood is at the centre of activity where shopping, restaurants, services, daycare and the elementary school are just a few steps away. The Slopes is a terraced family orientated community where residents can enjoy spectacular views of southern Vancouver Island to Mount Baker in Washington State.
The UniverCity community has earned multiple awards in design, energy efficiency and multi-family developments. Green spaces connect each of the neighborhoods and Simon Fraser University where students and families enjoy all that Burnaby Mountain has to offer.
PolyCan Health Centre will open a multi-disciplinary public health services clinic in the new and growing Burnaby Mountain community of UniverCity. It will be the only multidisciplinary public clinic in the City of Burnaby and just the fifth in Metro Vancouver. In addition to providing the first publicly available, on-mountain health care to a new residential community of 5,000 people and growing, PolyCan Health Centre will also serve more than 30,000 students, faculty and staff at the adjacent campuses of Simon Fraser University (SFU) and Fraser International College. The clinic is further expected to attract patients from off mountain due to the lack of comparable service within a 10-kilometre radius.
Polycan Health Centre will occupy approximately 1,850 square metres (approximately 20,000 square feet) and will be one of the anchor tenants in the new commercial/office/residential building at 9055 University High Street. It will include the services of family health care & walk-in care, women’s health, surgical daycare, plastic surgery, sports medicine, ophthalmology, chiropractic, rehabilitation, acupuncture, pain management, preventative care and medical diagnostic imaging services. It will also be equipped for basic surgical procedures and transfer capacity for those in need of advanced acute care. Early negotiations are also underway with SFU, Pacific Academic Institute of Chiropractic (PAIC), BCIT, and Fortius about using the facility for teaching and research.
Polycan Health Centre is within easy walking distance of the UniverCity residences.
UniverCity Childcare Centre
The UniverCity Childcare Centre is a revolutionary facility and the first childcare centre in the world to integrate the most advanced environmental design and the renowned Reggio Emilia childcare program. SFU Faculty of Education faculty and student researchers also use the setting to investigate optimal ways to provoke and sustain learning in Reggio-inspired classrooms and how this holistic approach effects social development and learning interactions within the classroom community.
Educating our children
University Highlands Elementary School, the province’s first LEED™ Gold school, has spaces for children in kindergarten through grade 7. University Highlands Elementary School has received 3.8 million in funding to expand creating 195 additional new student spaces and will encompass new before-and-after-school spaces so children will not have to leave school grounds to attend their after-school care programs.
Living in nature
UniverCity residents enjoy a diverse range of outdoor activities, walking trails and the peaceful tranquility of nature right outside their door. The City of Burnaby has a network of 26 multi-use trails covering 28 kilometres interconnecting the 576 hectares within the Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area. This forested ecosystem is ideal for dog-walking, hiking, walking, cycling and mountain biking.
Close to the heart of the city
Burnaby Mountain overlooks the City of Burnaby from the North East. The City of Burnaby itself is home to SFU, BCIT and a variety of neighborhood with single family homes, low-rise apartments and towering multi-family residences surrounding transportation, shopping and dining hubs including Metrotown, Brentwood Town Centre and Lougheed Town Centre.
Downtown Vancouver, approximately 15 kilometres from Burnaby Mountain, is easily accessible via a highly developed public transportation system or by private vehicle.
